2000 ford explorer sport , my air bag light comes on at times and some times it does'nt?

Whats the cause and what it means , do i have to replace the air bags itself.

Not necessarily, but any time the air bag light is on, the system is not working, and that is not a good thing. The most likely cause is the clock spring mechanism, especially if it comes and goes. This is the connection that your air bag unit uses to know what the computer is telling it to do, it connects thru the steering wheel so that a continuous connection is always present.

This is a job that is best left to a pro, I doubt if you want to have the bag go off in your face as you are working on it. You have to disconnect the battery and it helps if you have a scan tool handy, that system has codes and data available, and it is best to gather them first to be sure what your real problem is!
